In partnership with Peterborough Matters and PCRFM we have recently been searching for Peterborough’s Community Champions.
The initiative was launched on PCRFM on 4th March and the nominations received were overwhelming both in quality and quantity.
After a difficult decision making process, three community champions were selected and appeared on the Kev Lawrence breakfast show along with Princebuild Director Matthew Pudney and John Baker of Peterborough Matters.
The three applications that stood out were:
Week 1 – £1,000 donation to Ryan Maughan who is fundraising for CPSL Mind
Ryan is taking on the challenge of trekking 1ookm in the Sahara Desert in November raising money for CPSL Mind. Not only is this an amazing feat in itself but this is just the latest in a string of fundraising challenges he has undertaken. He has also trekked Hadrian’s wall, virtually cycled from Peterborough to Paris, trekked the highest mountain in the Atlas Mountains and more besides raising fantastic amounts of money for many charities.
Week 2 – £1,500 donation to Magpas Air Ambulance
The application for Magpas really stood out as they do so much good work in the community, helping so many people in so many different situations. The charity receives no government or NHS funding for the work it does and is also celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary.
Week 3 – £2,500 donation to Team Sementa
Marco Sementa of team Sementa received an amazing amount of nominations and stood out as a true community champion. He set up team Sementa in memory of his mum who passed away ten years ago and he has so far raised £50,000 for 50 different charities. All this is done via organising football games of which he has organised 179 games (and counting). Not only does he raise a fantastic amount for charity but the games are fully inclusive allowing people of all ages and abilities to take part.
Every single nomination received was a deserving winner and it was so hard to choose just three, but that is testament to the amazing charity work that is being undertaken in and around Peterborough.
